Visit to Auntie Mei's (6-7 May 2006)
Found the time to visit Auntie Mei over the last weekend. She stays in Marl-Sinsen, a town close to Essen and Dortmund and has been here for 15 years already, having married my uncle, Michael. Last I saw them was about 2 years ago when they came back to Singapore with my 2 cousins, and it was indeed a very good feeling to see them again. Nowhere in the world, I think, can you find such a warm welcome than from a family member. So anyway, they were extremely hospitable and I had a wonderful weekend there.

Although I wasn't thinking about sightseeing, they brought me to Köln (English: Cologne) and it's really big and beautiful, and by that, I mean only the Kölner Dom :p

Did I mention that it's another HUGE Gothic cathedral? (Third after St. Vitus and Kaiserdom)

Beautiful stained glass inside

Another grand hall

I thought the stained glass was the main attraction, simply wonderful

The view from the top

And from the bottom
Well, we climbed all 509 steps to the top, and boy was it tough! Double that of St. Vitus!!! But the view on top was worth it. The Kölner Dom was the tallest structure in the world from 1880 to 1884 and took 632 years to complete! It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (no coincidence, I don't plan all these okay!) and is even classified as "World Heritage in Danger".

Another interesting sight was the Roman-Germanic Museum (Deutsch: Römisch-Germanisches Museum), because Köln was a Roman city, and thus had many relics from the Roman era.

Original Roman column pieces

A section of the Roman wall

Description of the wall

This is the original flooring unearthed recently
But I think the attraction that will attract the most attention from ladies will be this:

Yup, everyone's wondering why a Swiss chocolate manufacturer will set up its museum here, but it's very interesting inside, with a full chocolate production line inside.

The museum from outside

Chocolate relics

Hollow chocolates

They spin the chocolate in the mould to make it hollow

A mechanised truffle maker

This is a chocolate fountain! Not only Willy Wonka has one!

Liquid chocolates made to set

Souvenir shop in the museum
Ok, shall not tempt you any more, but it's worth the visit.
Well, that was it for the first day, really thank both my uncle and auntie for going with me till quite late. So it was good that we had a more relaxing Sunday, going cycling in the forest and settling down to a BBQ lunch before they sent me back to the train station. I'll post the pics when I get them from my auntie (my camera was in cold storage the whole of Sunday, and more pics of the family by them).
OK, I know this post is short, but just to keep things simple for now. Watch for updates!
