Lake Chiemsee and Schloss Herrenchiemsee (8 April 2006)
For 2 years, I have yet to complete Ludwig II's castles, not till last Saturday, when I finally went to Herrenchiemsee! Luckily I had the company of a nice lady, Yihan, a fellow NUS student here on exchange. While the guys went to the castle tour of Linderhof and Neuschwanstein, like I brought KT and Chunwei 2 weeks ago, Yihan went to Neuschwanstein before, so I went with her to Herrenchiemsee instead.
Herrenchiemsee is situated on Herreninsel (Men's Island), an island in Lake Chiemsee, about 1 hour by train east of Munich. There is another island in the lake, Fraueninsel (Women's Island), and both are accessible by a ferry service.
Herreninsel was acquired by King Ludwig II in 1873, and construction of the castle began in May 1878. This was supposed to be a replica of the famous Palace of Versailles , not surprising since Ludwig II was a fan of the French royal family,l especially of French King Louis XIV, the Sun King. He had many rooms in the castle copied from Versailles, and some even better, like a larger Hall of Mirrors. It was not intended to be a complete replica, as the private rooms were catered to Ludwig's tastes. This was also the most expensive of the 3 casltes that he built, and yet the least completed. Inside the castle is also the King Ludwig II Museum.
Sorry, no photos allowed inside the castle.

Entrance to Prien am Chiemsee, where the ferry service starts

We got a nice seat

Mountains and water, what could be better?

The palace through the Schloss Canal

The lake is beautiful, isn't it?

Again, the Alps

Fraueninsel

The Augustinian Monastery on Herreninsel

The road to the castle

Almost there...

First sight of the castle

Yup, had to start somewhere, right?

The palace gardens, they planted the flowers already

The front of the castle

That's Yihan and myself

Inside the fountain. No water, no harm... at least I think so

View out the Schloss Canal

Again, the 2 of us. They cover the statues and fountains in winter, so that explains the ugly white ice-cream cone

From the top of the Augustinian Monastery

Can you see the moon?

Departing Herreninsel

Last shot of Fraueninsel
Beautiful, isn't it? I might want to spend a weekend there just to relax... in summer of course!
