Switzerland Trip – Part 1: Zurich (18-19 July 2006)
It’s finally the end of my internship! That very same evening, I got on the train to Zurich, the main transport hub and the biggest city of Switzerland. Too bad I was only there to spend the night, my schedule was packed. The journey took me to Lindau, where it was also the Austrian-German border, then on to Brienz, both places on the very beautiful Lake Constance (or “Bodensee” in Deutsch) and it just so happened I could catch the sunset.

Sunset on Bodensee
It went on to St Magarethen, St Gallen then Winterthur before pulling into Zürich Hauptbahnhof at around 2245. So much for Swiss precision, but one can argue that the train was held up at Brienz because of the border check.

Zürich Hauptbahnhof

The SBB train
I made a reservation for this hostel/1-star hotel, the Martahaus, one that went all-out to proclaim itself as “gay-friendly”… not very comforting to me. Anyway, I survived the night in this clean and modern place, which is very much like a hotel room, without steel underwear for protection. Turned out that each dorm was divided into cubicles and each occupant had his/her own cubicle, so 3 walls and a curtain as the “door” to my private little space, not too bad I’d say. It’s the best hostel I’ve every stayed in, so far. Definitely recommend it for people going there. It’s affordable too (CHF38, cheap by Swiss standards).

Nice morning in Zürich
Sent out a postcard, then it was onto a train to Chur.
